OKAY I have written myself a note about Henry V except sometimes those notes go unregarded for months, I am going to end up having a really packed summer holidays aren’t I OH WELL that is probably for the best.
As much time as it takes, I do enjoy actually reading the plays. I guess in a way it’s the history nerd in me rearing its head again - I like going back to the source and seeing what might’ve been cut or moved around in any particular adaptation. And it’s sort of like reading the book before seeing the film adaptation, but - well at the same time it really isn’t, because they’re plays, so they’re meant to be seen and… oh dear, now I’m getting conflicted. But - still. It’s the original thing. The source. I have to go back to it, I just have to.
But oh my god. Oh my god. All of the recommendations, THANK YOU THANK YOU now I must find them somehow. MOAR SUMMER SHENANIGANS? 8D

Okay, well, Zeffirelli’s anachronisms probably aren’t that bad, but I just really love history, so inaccuracies drive me nuts. No seriously, when is it even set, what are they even wearing, what is even going on also Mr Gibson I should like to inform you that if your sword is sharp enough to carve into stone, you should not be gripping it tightly by the blade. Apparently he has skin made of fucking diamond or something. (Though that’s not exactly an unusual bit of movie-making stupidity. *sigh*) I’ll grant, though, that it was pretty cinematic and had some nice scenery. But Gibson’s Hamlet was just - not Hamlet to me. But I guess that’s personal opinion. But I can understand where you’re coming from.
Seriously though, the best bit of that movie was Helena Bonham Carter, asdf;lkj her Ophelia was fuckin batshit and it was so good. Also it made me ship Ophelia/Horatio, possibly romantically, possibly in a ‘Horatio is a better brother than Laertes’ way, because of the way he was sent to take care of her and he’s carrying her in his arms and I just sort of melted. (And then I started raging again, because I was all “SEE THIS IS HOW HE’S MEANT TO BE WITH HAMLET, HONESTLY, DOES HE EVEN KNOW THE PRINCE IN THIS?!”
… Yeah. I mean it when I say Horatio makes or breaks a Hamlet for me. And the Zeffirelli Horatio was just - he was barely even there, they definitely didn’t seem like even friends let alone the epic bros and/or boyfriends that they are in other versions/that I see in the script. *sigh*)
But when you put it that way, I can see why one might appreciate Zeffirelli’s Hamlet. It does something - well, it does something very different, which is not necessarily that bad a thing, and it targets a slightly different audience. I still hate it, but - well, perhaps not with quite the same vehemence as before. (I’ll still never ever ever watch it again because it’s just painful and awful and not Hamlet to me, and ew ew ew incest, but - yes. Mildly altered point of view, now. Hm.)
(Oh dear, now I’m sort of equating Zeffirelli!Hamlet to Ritchie!Holmes in my head oh dear what have I done.)
